Homeboy Industries is seeking participants for its 5th annual 5K run/walk and community event titled “Every Angeleno Counts” on Saturday, Oct. 18 in downtown Los Angeles.
“At Homeboy Industries, we practice radical inclusion,” Homeboy Industries founder Father Greg Boyle said. “We all stand together on the margins of society dispelling the myth that some lives matter less than others. The 5K is particularly emblematic of this as men, women and children from all backgrounds join together for a joyous morning on the streets of Los Angeles.”
According to Boyle, the annual 5K run/walk celebrates the meaning of community by raising funds for Homeboy programs. Every year, the programs help thousands of formerly gang-affiliated and often previously incarcerated men and women transform their lives.
This year, more than 5,000 participants will come together for the 5K run/walk through the streets surrounding Homeboy Industry headquarters in the neighborhood adjacent to Chinatown.
“We’re recognizing every Los Angeles resident,” Homeboy Industries CEO Thomas Vozzo said. “We believe every Angeleno counts, including the thousands of homeboys and homegirls who come through our doors every year and serve as shining examples of what’s achievable through commitment, direction, and the power of purpose.”
Festivities begin at 8 a.m. with a pre-run yoga and art demonstration. Entertainment will be provided along the route by Taiko drummers, the Derby Dolls and others.
Post-run activities include an “Every Angeleno Counts” art show with works from local artists. Additionally, Homeboy Industries resident artist and substance abuse counselor Fabian Debora will help attendees create an “Every Angeleno Counts”-themed mural. Rappers, DJs, dancers and others will perform, and the Homeboy Food Truck will offer food and refreshments.
