In celebration of Super Bowl LVI, the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills has placed a statue titled “Touchdown” in the entryway to the hotel lobby. The statue was created by Lundeen Sculpture, in Loveland, Colorado, and brought to the hotel by Steven C. Barber, a former Beverly Hills resident and documentary filmmaker who is also involved with creating monuments at different locations throughout the United States.
Barber said he has visited the Peninsula Hotel once a week for nearly 35 years and is a friend of General Manager Offer Nissenbaum, who welcomed the statue at the hotel for the Super Bowl.
Barber said he has worked with Lundeen Sculpture on other projects, including Apollo 11 and Apollo 13 statues that are on display at the Kennedy Space Center. Lundeen Sculpture created the bronze “Football” statue approximately 10 years ago as a monument to the game of football. Barber said the statue, which generally represents the sport as opposed to a specific player, is the perfect piece to welcome fans for the big game.
“It’s been a big hit. Everyone loves it,” Barber said. “It represents the dream of being a football player. I’m grateful to Offer for displaying the statue at the hotel. He is so nice, and it shows they really care about their guests.”
“Touchdown” will be on display in the hotel’s entryway through Feb. 14.
The Super Bowl will be played Sunday, Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The Los Angeles Rams face off against the Cincinnati Bengals marking the second year in a row the hometown is playing in the Super Bowl.
