The Getty Museum staff has curated online content for viewers to experience different historical time periods through contemporary art.
Desiree Zenowich, senior communications lead at the Getty Villa, wrote a post titled “Gardens and Plants of the Getty Villa” for the Getty’s blog site, the Iris. Inspired by the garden, Zenowich examined current plants in the garden to share the ancient and modern uses of them. The post can be read at blogs.getty.edu/iris/discover-the-ancient-and-modern-uses-of-the-plants-in-the-getty-villa-herb-garden/.
Larisa Grollemond and Bryan C. Keene, assistant curators in the manuscripts department at the Getty Museum, examined Disney movies to identify which of them were the most medieval.
As they browsed Disney+, Grollemond and Keene examined a selection of films that presented a “global Middle Ages,” a chronological flexible period from 500-1500 that encompasses sites and stories from England, China, Arabia and Pacific Islands.
Their findings can be read at blogs.getty.edu/iris/which-disney-movie-is-the-most-medieval/.
Getty curator Anne Woollett brought Angelenos to the 17th century, as she discussed the life of Peter Paul Rubens, a prominent court painter, alongside Jim Cuno, president of the J. Paul Getty Trust. They created an episode for the Getty’s Art + Ideas podcast to examine Ruben’s life using 17th century biographies by three authors.
The episode can be heard at blogs.getty.edu/iris/podcast-the-lives-of-rubens/.
Lastly, as COVID-19 closed in on the United Kingdom in mid-March, opera singer and BBC broadcaster Peter Brathwaite had to cancel all of his upcoming performances. But he came across the Getty’s challenge to recreate a famous work of art using props at home.
Since March, he has created more than 40 recreations on Twitter, rediscovered and reinvented Black portraiture in the process. Associate editor at the Getty Erin Migdol wrote about Brathwaite.
