The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) hosted a special photo op on Jan. 8 to bid farewell to Jesus Rafael Soto’s “Penetrable” (pictured), which closes on Feb. 12.
In the 1950s and 1960s, numerous Latin American artists settled in Paris, where they became involved in the movement of kinetic and op art. One such artist was Soto, a Venezuelan whose projects directly engaged the viewers’ participation.
“Penetrable” is an architecturally-scaled structure intended to be pierced optically and physically by the viewer. The piece is made of basic industrial materials, the bulk of it comprised of yellow plastic hoses that are suspended from a simple steel grid. “Penetrable” was loaned to LACMA by the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and installed on LACMA’s plaza.
LACMA is located at 4905 Wilshire Blvd. For information, call (323)857-6000, or visit lacma.org.
