A photograph in the Sept. 16, 1999, issue of the Beverly Press and Park Labrea News showed Rabbi Naftoli Estulin, of Chabad Russian Synagogue in West Hollywood, blowing a shofar (ram’s horn) in celebration of Rosh Hashanah. The shofar signals the beginning of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and the start of the High Holy Days, which also include Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). This year, Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on Friday, Sept. 11, and ends at sunset on Sunday, Sept. 13, and Yom Kippur begins at sunset on Sunday, Sept. 20, and ends at sunset on Monday, Sept. 21.
For information on local observances, see “Rosh Hashanah ushers in High Holy Days.”
