One person was killed and four others were hospitalized on Sept. 3 in a vehicle collision in the parking lot outside a Trader Joe’s store at the Gilmore Station shopping center, located on the northwest corner of Fairfax Avenue and Third Street in Beverly Grove.
Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Tony Im said the crash occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. and involved an elderly driver of a white Tesla sedan who struck five people and crashed into a parking attendant kiosk.
“We had multiple pedestrians, including one person who is deceased,” Im said. “There was no crime involved. The female driver is approximately 80 to 85 years old. She stayed at the scene. It is being investigated as an accident.”
The LAPD and the Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner have not released the deceased victim’s name or gender. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed four people were taken to hospitals, but the severity of their injuries was not available.
Hayworth Avenue resident Andre Ungvari, who lives across the alley from the parking lot, said the loud crash was unsettling. He said the victim who died appeared to be an older woman.
“Living here near Third I have heard a lot of crashes, but it was the loudest crash I’ve heard in the 15 years I’ve lived here,” Ungvari said. “I ran downstairs and tried to see if I could help but there was nothing you could do. There were a lot of people around and everybody was trying to help. Nobody knew what happened.”
The collision is under investigation by the LAPD’s West Traffic Division. Anyone with information is urged to call (213)473-0222.
