Sequins, feathers and glitter are unmistakable parts of any Robert Gordon “Bob” Mackie design, earning him the nicknames “Sultan of Sequins,” the “Rajah of Rhinestones” and the “Guru of Glitter.”

The legendary costume designer died at 87 on Sep. 14 in his Palm Springs home. The cause of death was determined to be pneumonia, a representative from his team confirmed to PEOPLE magazine.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a fashion and costume designer, which is all he ever wanted to do,” Mackie’s team wrote in a post shared to his Instagram account on Sept. 14. “His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”

Best known for his collaborations with Cher, Mackie designed for dozens of stars including Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli and more recently, Miley Cyrus and Sabrina Carpenter.

In 1997, Mackie opened his own costume house at 8636 Melrose Ave., where stars such as Barbara Sinatra, Cyd Charisse and Ginny Mancini came to buy his glamorous designs. Later, he used the studio to construct prototype garments for his commercial retail lines, which he launched in 1982.

The “Sultan of Sequins” called West Hollywood home for roughly 19 years, before ultimately moving to his primary home in Palm Springs.

Born in California, Mackie’s parents divorced when he was 2. The couturier spent his early childhood in Alhambra, California, where he was raised primarily by his grandparents.

“I always knew what I wanted to do,” he told PEOPLE in 2021.

Mackie began his career in Hollywood at Paramount Studios, working as an assistant to legendary American costume designer Edith Head. Mackie continued working in Hollywood with French-American costume designer Jean Louis, where he designed Marilyn Monroe’s iconic yet scandalous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” gown.

It was his work in television that cemented Mackie as one of the most iconic designers. Mackie loved film and TV and, since he was a little boy, dreamed of designing costumes that would grace the Hollywood stage.

In the early 1960s, young Mackie started working under Ray Aghayan, a trailblazing Iranian-American Hollywood costume designer based in Beverly Hills, on “The Judy Garland Show.” At first, Mackie worked as Aghayan’s sketch artist, but eventually the pair became partners.

Mackie and Aghayan’s professional relationship turned romantic in 1963, and they remained devoted life partners for nearly 50 years, until Aghayan died 2011.

Mackie served as the primary costume designer for “The Carol Burnett Show’s” entire 11-season run, from 1967-1978, creating over 17,000 designs. His whimsically designed 1976 “curtain dress,” mimicking “Gone With the Wind,” worn by Burnett on “The Carol Burnett Show,” is permanently on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and was considered a “vital ingredient” in Burnett’s comic portrayal.

Burnett often found her characters through Mackie’s designs, and when she saw the “curtain dress,” she knew it would go down as “one of the greatest sight gags ever in the history of television,” she told Vogue in 2019.

From creating looks for Burnett to dressing Cher, Mackie continuously toed the line between culture and scandal, defining his career as a designer.

Mackie first met Cher in 1967 when she and Sonny Bono were guest stars on “The Carol Burnett Show”; the pair reunited when Mackie worked as a costume designer for “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour,” which ran from 1971 to 1984. The two went on to work together on “The Sonny and Cher Show,” Cher’s Broadway show, “The Cher Show” and decades’ worth of Cher’s outfits.

With every outfit, Mackie would deck Cher out in glowing sequins and feathers and subtract more and more fabric. Her open-to-wear-anything attitude paired perfectly with Mackie’s open-to-design-anything philosophy. Mackie constantly pushed against the status quo, and in his first year designing for “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour,” the couturier created a stunning two-piece sequin outfit that boldly exposed the star’s midriff, according to the New York Times. With this blatant protest against network censorship, Cher became the first person to show their belly button on network television.

Pushing the envelope would continue to define the relationship between Mackie and Cher, whom many considered his muse.

One of Mackie’s most memorable designs for Cher was created out of spite. Colloquially known as Cher’s “revenge dress,” Mackie designed the piece after the star did not receive a Best Actress nomination at the 1986 Oscars, despite her critically acclaimed performance in the movie “Mask.” Instead, Cher was asked to present the award.

Cher showed up to the ceremony with her midriff exposed in a black bedazzled matching top and skirt and a headdress so tall that camera operators struggled to photograph the ensemble.

Mackie’s work is unmistakably recognizable, and he may be one of the most influential names in costuming. Throughout his career, the designer won a Tony Award for his work on “The Cher Show,” nine Emmy Awards and three Oscar nominations.

From Cher’s 1974 Met Gala “naked dress” and Madonna’s sparkling 1991 Oscars dress to Elton John’s 1975 bedazzled Dodgers uniform, Mackie cemented his status as one of Hollywood’s most iconic designers. His legendary career spanned six decades, beginning in the 1960s and continuing until his death.
