Tony Award-winning actor and singer Laura Benanti will bring her one-woman comedy show “Laura Benanti: Nobody Cares” to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts for five performances Oct. 1-4.
Presented in the Bram Goldsmith Theater, the 90-minute show combines autobiographical stories with original songs co-written by Benanti and music director Todd Almond. Annie Tippe directs.
The production arrives in Beverly Hills following a run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and two sold-out Off-Broadway engagements. It is based on the Audible Original of the same name and centers on Benanti’s experiences with motherhood, ambition, aging and people-pleasing.
“The show is about my journey from being an 18-old girl playing a grown woman on Broadway opposite a 70-year-old man, and all of the trappings that came with that,” Benanti said in an interview with the Bay Area Reporter.
Benanti said the show traces the path from her early Broadway career to her current life as a mother of two daughters.
“A lot of it is about my predisposition toward people-pleasing, and you just can’t be that when you have children, because they will never like you all the time,” she said.
Benanti made her Broadway debut as a teenager and later won a Tony Award for her performance as Louise in the 2008 revival of “Gypsy.” Her stage work has also included productions of “Into the Woods,” “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” “She Loves Me” and “My Fair Lady.” She has also appeared on television in series including “The Gilded Age” and “Gossip Girl.”
“Nobody Cares” mixes stories about Benanti’s family, marriages, career and experiences as a parent with songs written with Almond. The production also examines the expectations placed on women in entertainment and the ways those expectations can carry into personal life.
Performances will be held Oct. 1-2 at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 3 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
Tickets start at $53.90.
