Members of Chabad of the Miracle Mile celebrated the holiday of Sukkot with a tour of the community on Sept. 28 and a stop to visit friends at a building at 8484 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills.
Sukkot is a seven-day Jewish holiday that runs from Sept. 25 through Oct. 2 this year. Known as the Festival of Booths, the holiday period is symbolized by temporary structures, or tents, known as sukkahs that are constructed outdoors, often in back yards. The sukkahs have a dual meaning, representing the temporary structures the Israelites lived in after the exodus from Egypt, as well as gratitude for a bountiful harvest season. Members of the Jewish community gather inside sukkahs, which represent fragility and humility, and come together in the spirit of unity, hospitality and peace. Chabad of the Miracle Mile toured the community with a sukkah on the back of a truck to celebrate.
“The idea is to bring the joy of the holiday to everyone,” said Mendel Fischer, of Chabad of the Miracle Mile.
“You want to be thankful for everything that God has given you, everything that is produced from the Earth, all the fruits and vegetables,” added attorney Ryan Naim, a friend of Fischer whose office is located at 8484 Wilshire Blvd. “It’s customary to have fruit. I have a sukkah at home and we have fruit hanging on it. They are to show we are thankful for everything that the Earth has provided.”
