The Getty Center remained closed on Sept. 10 after a brush fire burned approximately 25 acres north of the museum along the 405 Freeway the previous afternoon, prompting the evacuation of visitors and staff and warnings for nearby residents.
The Getty Fire was first reported at approximately 4:17 p.m. on Sept. 9 near Getty Center Drive and the northbound 405 Freeway in Bel Air, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The blaze spread through brush on the hillside as firefighters attacked it from the ground and air.
The fire was initially estimated at approximately 5 acres before growing to 20 acres by 5:49 p.m. LAFD announced at 6:12 p.m. that firefighters had stopped the fire’s forward progress at approximately 25 acres.
Evacuation warnings were issued during the fire for an area roughly bounded by Promontory Road to the north, Sunset Boulevard to the south, the 405 Freeway to the east and Bundy Drive to the west. The warnings were later lifted.
Visitors and staff at the Getty Center evacuated safely as firefighters battled the blaze nearby. Getty officials said the museum’s collections and artwork were safe.
“The brushfire north of the Getty Center has been contained. Thank you to LAFD for their hard work, and to staff and visitors who evacuated safely and swiftly,” Getty officials said in a statement.
The Getty Center remained closed to the public on Sept. 10 “in an effort to support LAFD’s access to the site,” officials added.
Approximately 185 LAFD personnel remained on scene for mop-up and containment operations after firefighters stopped the fire’s forward progress.
No injuries or structural damage was reported.
The fire sent a large plume of smoke above the Sepulveda Pass that was visible from surrounding areas of the Westside.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Sept. 10.
Getty officials had not announced when the Getty Center would reopen as of Sept. 10.
