The Beverly Hills Fire Department extinguished a major fire at a two-story apartment building in the 200 block of South Rexford Drive on Sept. 9.
Firefighters evacuated residents from the building and prevented the flames from spreading to neighboring structures. No civilians were injured, but two firefighters were treated – one for smoke inhalation and the other for heat exhaustion.
The fire was reported at approximately 10:30 a.m., Beverly Hills public information manager Lauren Santillana said. The BHFD was assisted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Los Angeles Fire Department. The roof of the building partially collapsed, so the BHFD used a hose attached to a ladder truck to douse the flames from above. The fire was extinguished shortly after noon.
Students and staff at nearby Beverly Vista Middle School were asked to shelter in place during the fire, but an evacuation was not ordered, Santillana said.
The city is working with displaced residents to find temporary shelter for them, she added. The BHFD remained at the scene throughout the afternoon. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
