The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will honor filmmaker and composer John Carpenter, actor Colman Domingo and actress Charlize Theron during its annual fundraising gala on Oct. 17.
Theron will receive the Icon Award, which recognizes an artist whose career has had a significant global impact. Carpenter will receive the Luminary Award for contributions that have expanded the creative possibilities of filmmaking, while Domingo will receive the Vantage Award, recognizing an artist who challenges dominant narratives surrounding cinema.
“The Academy Museum Gala is a celebration of the artists and storytellers whose work continues to shape the cultural impact of cinema around the world,” Academy Museum Director and President Amy Homma said. “For our sixth annual gala, we are honored to recognize John Carpenter, Colman Domingo and Charlize Theron, whose extraordinary careers exemplify the creativity, innovation and excellence that continues to move the industry forward.”
The gala raises funds for the museum’s exhibitions, educational programs, public screenings and accessibility initiatives. Honorees also participate in museum programming connected to the event.
Theron, an Academy Award-winning actress, will participate in a conversation with the museum’s Teen Council on Aug. 22, followed by a screening of “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015).
Carpenter will participate in three nights of screenings of his films in connection with “The Horror Show,” the museum’s new large-scale exhibition. The programming includes a Sept. 26 screening of “Halloween” (1978). Carpenter is known for directing films including “The Thing,” “Escape from New York” and “They Live.”
Domingo is a two-time Academy Award nominee whose recent film credits include “Rustin” and “Sing Sing.”
The Academy Museum Gala is held annually to support the museum’s work celebrating and preserving motion pictures.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is located at 6067 Wilshire Blvd.
