A large contingent of police officers and firefighters responded to what was reported as a hazardous materials incident on Aug. 3 at a seven-story apartment building at 1630 N. Schrader Blvd. in Hollywood.

A resident reported feeling ill after opening a package delivered in the mail that the resident said contained a suspicious substance. Authorities tested the substance and determined it was non-toxic and did not pose a threat to the public, Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Charles Miller said. He did not identify the substance.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz said firefighters arrived and treated the patient for “minor symptoms.” The resident declined to be transported by paramedics to the hospital, she added.

Residents on the same floor as the unit where the substance was found were temporarily evacuated and assessed for medical issues, and no further injuries were reported, Lantz said.

The incident occurred at the Hollywood Arts Collective Cicely Tyson Residential Community, which opened in 2024 on Schrader Boulevard just south of Hollywood Boulevard. The building contains 151 affordable housing units, primarily serving members of the arts community and entertainment industry. The community also serves as home to the Entertainment Community Fund Western Region Headquarters. Calls to the building’s management were not returned by press time.
