TreePeople has launched “Rooting for LA: 28,000 Trees by 2028,” a regional initiative aimed at planting and distributing 28,000 trees across greater Los Angeles before the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The campaign seeks to create a lasting environmental legacy through community tree plantings, tree giveaways, school greening projects and mountain restoration events. Organizers said the effort is intended to expand shade, strengthen climate resilience, improve watershed health, support biodiversity and promote healthier communities throughout Southern California.

The initiative comes as Los Angeles continues to face challenges including extreme heat, wildfire risk, water insecurity, flooding and declining biodiversity. TreePeople said trees provide a nature-based approach to addressing many of those issues while helping improve neighborhood livability.

According to the organization, each tree planted represents an investment in living infrastructure that can help make the region cooler, greener and more resilient. TreePeople also hopes the international attention surrounding the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will encourage broader environmental investment and community participation in urban forestry and restoration efforts.

As part of the campaign, TreePeople will host a commemorative Rooting for LA tree planting on July 21 at its Coldwater Canyon Park headquarters.
