Milken Community School has received a $36 million gift from the Koum Family Foundation, helping advance the school’s capital campaign and plans for a new educational campus.
School officials said the donation brings the campaign total to $152 million. In recognition of the gift, Milken will rename its 22-acre Milken East property, formerly the site of American Jewish University, as the Jan Koum Campus of Milken Community School.
The donation supports the school’s ongoing efforts to expand and enhance its educational facilities. Milken Community School, located in Los Angeles, is among the largest Jewish day schools in the United States.
“Jan Koum’s extraordinary generosity is a profound investment in the future of the Jewish people,” said Dr. Sarah Shulkind, head of school at Milken Community School. “We see the creation of this campus as a transformational moment for the Los Angeles Jewish community.”
School leaders said the campus project is intended to strengthen educational opportunities and expand resources for current and future students.
The announcement also highlighted research on Jewish day school education. According to a recent study by Prizmah, a network of Jewish day schools and yeshivas in North America, alumni of Jewish day schools report higher levels of connection to Jewish identity and Israel than those who did not attend such schools.
Milken officials said the new campus represents a long-term investment in Jewish education and community life in Los Angeles. The school credited the Koum Family Foundation and other donors for supporting the initiative.
The Jan Koum Campus will be located on the former American Jewish University property, which Milken acquired as part of expansion plans.
