The standoff occurred after the victim crashed at Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard.
A 40-year-old rideshare driver wanted for the attempted murder of a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy was arrested in Beverly Hills after crashing his pickup near Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard and holding a female passenger hostage for nearly nine hours on May 3.
The suspect, Osvaldo Delreal, allegedly hit a deputy with his vehicle around 2:55 a.m. on May 3 after the deputy pulled him over for a traffic violation in Lennox, an unincorporated community near the 405 and 105 freeways. Delreal dragged the deputy for approximately 150 feet as he fled the scene, according to the sheriff’s department. The deputy was hospitalized and is recovering. Authorities put out a bulletin asking police agencies to look for the suspect’s silver pickup.
At some point after Delreal struck the deputy, he picked up the female passenger who was in his vehicle during the standoff. Around 1:30 p.m., an automated license plate reader camera flagged Delreal’s pickup near San Vicente and La Cienega boulevards and Beverly Hills Police Department officers attempted to pull over the vehicle. Delreal drove away, however, and led officers on a brief pursuit before crashing into a car at Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard. BHPD Lt. Kevin Orth said a S.W.A.T. team was called to the scene and a standoff ensued. The suspect refused to exit the pickup or let the female passenger out.
Around 3 p.m., personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau were deployed. Officers from the BHPD and LASD crisis negotiation teams tried to de-escalate the situation for hours, attempting to get the suspect to surrender. Shortly before 11 p.m., the female passenger escaped the vehicle on her own, authorities said. She was not physically injured.
Deputies used a K-9 Unit and smoke grenades to take Delreal into custody around 12:10 a.m. on May 4. He was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries after being arrested. Delreal was booked for attempted murder of a police officer and is being held on $1 million bail, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said.
Detectives from the LASD’s South Los Angeles Station are conducting the follow-up investigation. The sheriff’s department spokesperso said no further information about the passenger is being released, or which ridesharing company employed Delreal. Media reports stated he worked for Uber.
“Despite the suspect’s hostile actions, our Special Enforcement Bureau personnel remained focused, disciplined and deliberate,” said LASD Capt. Robbie Royster, of the Special Enforcement Bureau. “They slowed the situation down, established a containment and created the time and space our crisis negotiators needed to do their job. Throughout the incident, our personnel focused on the safety of everyone involved, even when it meant placing themselves in harm’s way. That commitment is what ultimately led to the safe release of the victim and a controlled, peaceful resolution. We also appreciate the strong collaboration and support of our law enforcement partners at the Beverly Hills Police Department, whose assistance was instrumental in ensuring the safety of the community.”
Authorities credited the BHPD’s automated license plate reader camera for helping to locate a dangerous suspect.
“These cameras – they really are an assist to public safety,” BHPD Lt. Kevin Orth added.
