The Fine Arts Theatre Beverly Hills is showing a double feature of films by director Richard Fleischer including “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (1954) and “Compulsion” (1959) on Saturday, April 11, at 1:30 p.m. Fleischer’s daughter Jane and granddaughter Claire will participate in a Q&A session moderated by entertainment journalist and publicist Tim Williams.

Fleischer was a versatile American film director known for nearly 50 films across many genres including sci-fi, film noir and epics. The son of animation pioneer Max Fleischer, he began his career at RKO in the 1940s.

Fleischer began by directing stylish, low-budget noir thrillers (“Armored Car Robbery,” “The Narrow Margin”), progressed into swift-moving fantasies (“20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” “Fantastic Voyage”) and continued with sword-and-sorcery films (“Conan the Destroyer,” “Red Sonja”). Despite his auspicious upbringing, young Fleischer originally intended to be a psychiatrist. He took pre-med courses at Brown University but soon became interested in acting and film when he began performing musical theater on campus.
