The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced on March 11 that it is operating at an elevated level of readiness and is maintaining increased vigilance in response to current global events. The department is working closely with federal and local law enforcement partners to share intelligence and monitor the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and assess any potential impacts in communities.

The safety of the public remains the highest priority, LASD officials said. As part of the preparedness efforts, personnel remain attentive to all potential threats, including lone-actor attacks, sleeper cells and advanced technological and cyber-related threats.

Out of an abundance of caution, and in recognition of current religious observances, the department has increased patrols around places of worship, cultural institutions and other prominent locations throughout the county. The department is proactively reviewing deployment plans, enhancing coordination with patrol stations and ensuring that additional resources are available. Additionally, the department has cultural liaisons who work directly with community members to address concerns and foster engagement.

The Los Angeles Police Department also remains on high alert and is heightening security measures in Hollywood around the Dolby Theatre, the site of the 98th Academy Awards.

“The Academy Awards is one of the largest and most celebrated events hosted in the city of Los Angeles each year. The Los Angeles Police Department works closely with the Academy and our regional public safety partners to ensure a safe, secure and welcoming environment for all attendees, workers and visitors. This year’s security planning has been extensive and coordinated across multiple LAPD divisions, supported by local, state and federal agencies. Our preparations include layered security perimeters, traffic management plans and a highly visible police presence throughout the Hollywood area,” read a statement from the LAPD. “These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy developed months in advance to anticipate challenges, support event operations and maintain the safety of everyone participating in or visiting the Oscars. We encourage attendees and community members to follow posted advisories, remain aware of their surroundings and promptly report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. The LAPD remains committed to ensuring that this iconic event is enjoyed safely by all.” 

During a March 11 press conference, Academy Awards producer Raj Kapoor addressed the security concerns surrounding the show, scheduled for March 15 at 4 p.m.

“I feel like on this show, we have one of the best teams in the business in all aspects, and that comes down to our security team,” Kapoor said. “So, of course, every year we monitor what’s going on in the world. We have the support of the FBI and the LAPD, and it’s a close collaboration. This show has to run like clockwork, but we want everybody that is coming to this show, that is witnessing the show, that is even a fan of the show – when they’re standing outside the barricades – we want everybody to feel safe and protected and welcome.”

Residents are also cautioned to remain aware of threats online and in digital spaces. Suspicious activity should always be reported to law enforcement. If someone witnesses a violent act or believes one is imminent, they should call 911.
