After more than a decade of construction, Metro will open the first segment of the D Line subway extension to the Wilshire/La Cienega station on Friday, May 8. 

The announcement was made on Feb. 26 by Metro Board Chair Fernando Dutra. 

“This moment signals a new era of mobility for Los Angeles and a proud milestone for Metro,” Dutra said. “Think about what it means as far as transportation. A trip from Downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills in just 21 minutes. That’s transformative, that’s reliable and affordable. That is the kind of world-class transit system Angelenos deserve and it’s about time. This is wonderful.” 

The 3.92-mile first segment of the D Line extension begins at Wilshire/Western and includes new stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega. Construction is also underway on the second and third segments. Section two includes the Beverly Drive and Century City stations and is scheduled to open in spring 2027. Section three includes the UCLA/Westwood and Westwood/VA Hospital stations and is scheduled to open in fall 2027.  

Dutra emphasized that the entire D Line extension project will be open before the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games, “fulfilling a century-long dream of connecting Downtown Los Angeles to the Westside by rail.” 

Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins said new rail line will be a major benefit for the public. 

“We can’t wait for Angelenos to gain access to so many things that L.A. has love for, from the museums and attractions in mid-Wilshire to Restaurant Row, Koreatown, Little Ethiopia – the possibilities are really endless,” Wiggins said. “And with football fans from around the world headed here this summer for the World Cup, this extension will help them explore our amazing region as well.”
