Gallop into the Year of the Horse with a joyful day at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, Jan. 17, with two paired events.

At the indoor Lovelace Studio Theatre at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., The Wallis presents “The Great Race,” a ticketed performance by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, which tells the story of the Chinese Zodiac, directed and written by Reiko Ho. The show weaves a family celebration of Lunar New Year with a retelling of one of the most beloved tales in Chinese folklore. Through traditional movement, music and martial arts, the audience learns how each animal earned its place in the 12-year cycle.

Concurrent with “The Great Race,” The Wallis hosts Family Fest Celebrating Lunar New Year, a free outdoor festival celebration from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the outdoor grounds of The Wallis.

Family Fest returns as the campus comes alive with the sights, sounds and traditions of the Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival. Join The Wallis to welcome good fortune, share happiness and celebrate new beginnings. From colorful traditions and lively performances to immersive arts and crafts, there is something for everyone to explore. Whether learning the art of Kung Fu, making origami or simply soaking up the festive atmosphere, it is the perfect way to start the year together.

The day of celebration will include immersive arts and crafts, traditional foods and performances by Qing Wei Lion and Dragon Dance Cultural Troupe, Cold Tofu Improv Comedy Troupe, Beverly Hills Public Library and the city of Beverly Hills Community Services Department.

The Wallis continues to offer free events for families and young audiences. Inspired by The Wallis’ popular Sunday Funday events, Family Fest brings even more fun with interactive activities and performances at different locations across The Wallis’ campus.
