Don’t we look great at 80? That’s right, eight decades ago in 1946, the Park Labrea News first published, coinciding with the burgeoning construction of the Park La Brea apartment complex, which was then quickly becoming one of the largest in the world – a status that remains with more than 4,200 units total. The newspaper initially served the development, announcing community news, events and spotlighting its residents.

The Park Labrea News eventually expanded its coverage along the Miracle Mile and Fairfax District. In 1990, after it was purchased by Karen and Michael Villalpando, it increased its circulation and upgraded from a biweekly to weekly paper. In 1991, 35 years ago, it expanded even further under the Beverly Press banner. Today, the Beverly Press and Park Labrea News continue to serve the iconic Park La Brea, as well as Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Carthay Circle, Fairfax, Hollywood, Hancock Park and the Miracle Mile.

All year long for our 80th anniversary, we will be showcasing our storied history, from the newspaper’s inception through to today’s award-winning news team. We will also take a look back at our neighborhood’s history – the people and places that have lived in it, worked in it and shaped it into the community it is today.
