Phillips (1894-1968), who was retired from the Navy and lived at Park La Brea at the time, served as president of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works. He was honored in conjunction with Veterans Day for his role in training 200,000 members of the Seabees – the Navy’s construction battalions – during World War II.

This year, a Veterans Day community gathering will be held on Monday, Nov. 10, from 10-10:30 a.m. at Beverly Gardens Park between Cañon and Crescent drives in Beverly Hills. Veterans Day ceremonies will also be held on Tuesday, Nov. 11, in West Hollywood at the Sal Guarriello Veterans’ Memorial, corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Holloway Drive, and at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive.
