“A penny saved is a penny earned.”

In 1737, Benjamin Franklin famously wrote in his “Poor Richards Almanac,” “a penny saved is a penny earned.” His actual words were, “a two pence saved is a two pence earned.”

This was translated to “a penny” in 1792 when the United States Mint began issuing copper coins.

The last ever U. S. penny was minted November 12, 2025, in Philadelphia, Pa.
