The upcoming United Nations General Assembly is once again overshadowed by the ongoing misuse of UNGA Resolution 2758. For decades, this resolution has been distorted to exclude Taiwan from the U.N. system, even though the text makes no mention of Taiwan. In fact, the resolution only addresses the question of China’s representation in the U.N. It does not determine Taiwan’s status, nor does it endorse China’s so called “one China principle.”
This misrepresentation has had serious consequences. Taiwan’s 23 million people are denied participation in the U.N. system, including critical platforms for global health, sustainable development and security. Such exclusion undermines the very principles of inclusivity and equality that the U.N. Charter was built upon.
The situation is more urgent than ever. China continues to pressure U.N. member states into accepting its false narrative, threatening peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific. This year’s U.N. theme, “Better Together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights,” rings hollow if Taiwan remains shut out.
Taiwan has consistently shown that it is a responsible global partner, contributing to humanitarian aid, public health and sustainable development. Excluding Taiwan not only violates the rights of its 23 million people but also weakens the world’s collective capacity to address shared challenges.
The U.N. system was established to serve all humanity, not the political interests of a single power. It is time to end this misrepresentation and allow Taiwan to take its rightful place in the international community.
