Retroformat Silent Films and the American Cinematheque, in partnership with the Mount Saint Mary’s University graduate programs in film, television and new media, will present a series of select screenings launching the Los Angeles Silent Film Festival to take place Sept. 12-14 at the American Cinematheque at the Los Feliz 3.

All films will feature live musical accompaniment by musical director Cliff Retallick and guest artist Andrew Earle Simpson.

Special screenings will include the world restoration premiere of “He Who Gets Slapped” (1924) starring Lon Chaney, Sr., John Gilbert and Norma Shearer, as well as the Universal Studios horse-racing drama “Silks and Saddles” (1929) and “The Enemy Sex” (1924) starring Betty Compson.

Other highlights will include the world restoration premiere and 100th anniversary screening of the comedy “Lovers in Quarantine” (1925) starring Bebe Daniels and Harrison Ford; a centennial screening of the World War I classic “The Big Parade” (1925) starring John Gilbert and Renee Adoree; the Los Angeles restoration premiere of “Kid Boots” (1926) starring Clara Bow and Eddie Cantor; a rare presentation of the horror classic “The Man Who Laughs” (1928) and the digital preservation premiere of the comedy-romance “Up the Road With Sally” (1918) starring Constance Talmadge and directed by William Desmond Taylor, whose enigmatic murder rocked Hollywood in 1922 and remains unsolved to this day.

Renowned film historian Randy Haberkamp will curate a rich assortment of short subjects to accompany select features. Preeminent historian and film curator of the Bison Archives Marc Wanamaker will also provide special insights.

The LASFF Film Scholarship Award for academic research and publications in the field of silent film will be presented to author/editor Anthony Slide, acclaimed by the legendary Lillian Gish as “our preeminent historian of the silent film.” Slide’s extensive body of work includes authoring more than 70 books and editing more than 150 volumes on the history of popular culture. The festival will also present the LASFF Preservation Award to Suzanne Lloyd for her outstanding work preserving the legacy of her grandfather, legendary comedian Harold Lloyd, along with a screening of the Harold Lloyd classic, “The Freshman” (1925).
