The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles is hosting a special screening of the Korean historical action film “The Battle: Roar to Victory” (2019) on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the center’s Ari Hall.

As part of the Stories of Korean Liberation in Films series, the center is showing Korean films that highlight key events and figures from the country’s anti-Japanese independence movement during the colonial era. The series, running through November, also commemorates the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese rule in 1945.

“The Battle: Roar to Victory” dramatizes the real-life 1920 battle in Manchuria, where Korean independence forces decisively defeated the Japanese army. Led by Gen. Hong Beom-do, the victory was among the earliest and most symbolic triumphs of the Korean independence movement. The film vividly captures the tactical brilliance, courage and sacrifice of the independence fighters through intense action sequences and powerful storytelling.

The film, which stars Yu Hae-jin, Ryu Jun-yeol and Cho Woo-jin, resonated with audiences for the emotional portrayal of unsung heroes and the collective spirit of resistance. It honors those whose names may not appear in history books, but whose sacrifices paved the way for freedom and peace in modern Korea.

“’The Battle: Roar to Victory’ is a story of how ordinary people created extraordinary history during a time when the nation had lost its sovereignty,” KCCLA Director Haedon Lee said. “We hope this screening offers an opportunity to reflect on the courage and determination of those who fought for Korea’s independence.”

The Stories of Korean Liberation in Films series continues with “MAL-MO-E: The Secret Mission” (2019) on Oct. 8, and “Dongju; The Portrait of a Poet” (2016), a film about the life of poet Yun Dong-ju, on Nov. 19.

All screenings will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Ari Hall at KCCLA, 5500 Wilshire Blvd. Admission is free but reservations are required. For information and to RSVP, visit kccla.org.
