A 43-year-old man is facing felony arson charges for lighting a brush fire in Runyon Canyon Park on July 13, police said.

The suspect, Andrew Ocalliham, was detained by park users after they saw him light a fire near the base of a tree and run away. Members of the public called 911 and held the suspect until park rangers arrived and took him into custody. Ocalliham was later turned over to officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division and booked for arson, LAPD spokesman David Cuellar said.

“We got a call on July 13 around 11:45 a.m. about people holding someone in Runyon Canyon Park and the LAPD assisted with the arrest,” Cuellar said. “Witnesses observed the suspect running away from a fire at the location and held him.”

Multiple Los Angeles Fire Department trucks responded and firefighters extinguished the blaze at 12:25 p.m. The fire blackened a quarter-acre area of brush but no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

Park users captured video of Ocalliham’s arrest and later posted it on social media. Ocalliham is being held on $75,000 bail. He has a lengthy criminal record of misdemeanor crimes dating to 2023 with arrests in West Hollywood, Hollywood, Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley.
