The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a hit-and-run that left a bicyclist dead in West Hollywood on Thursday, July 10, at approximately 9:47 p.m. near the intersection of Fountain Avenue and Gardner Street.
“A man on a bicycle was traveling westbound on Fountain. A white BMW was traveling the same direction and struck the bicyclist and kept driving westbound on Fountain,” West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station Sgt. Kevin Herrera said.
The man was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
Herrera added that the suspect has not been identified.
The West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station described the suspect’s vehicle as a “white older model BMW sedan” that may have a shattered windshield on the passenger side.
The exact cause of the collision has yet to be determined, and it is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a role in the fatal collision, according to the sheriff’s department.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station at (310)855-8850.
Frequent collisions on Fountain Avenue have raised concerns from members of the community, who pushed for a streetscape redesign which was approved by the City Council in 2023, and is currently in the planning process. The city will hold a meeting to discuss the redesign on Aug. 19.
“My heart is with the family of this cyclist and with the entire cycling community who have long been fighting for the much needed transportation safety and equity to prevent these horrific tragedies here and all across the region,” West Hollywood Mayor Chelsea Byers said. “The work to advance protected bike lanes throughout West Hollywood has gained significant traction and we all have to take this opportunity to transform the safety on our streets seriously to better care for all in our community.”
“My heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the cyclist who lost their life. No one should have to experience this kind of loss,” West Hollywood City Councilman Danny Hang said. “This tragedy underscores the need to make Fountain Avenue truly safe for cyclists and pedestrians. I’m committed to continuing to push for improvements in the form of protected bike lanes, better lighting, and real traffic calming. And to the driver: please do the right thing. Come forward. A family is grieving and deserves answers.”

Byers doesn’t even attempt to hide her naked political exploitation of this sad accident. She openly seeks to use this “opportunity” to push a divisive agenda. I find many safe options to riding my bike throughout the region that don’t demand radical and expensive re-engineering of infrastructure. The goal is bike lanes where they make sense. There are plenty of parallel options that are safe. The fetish for Fountain is a product of selfish myopia coupled with the agenda of developers to create conditions to eliminate zoning restrictions.
