Descanso Gardens offers a vibrant lineup of summer events that invite visitors to explore music, movement, nature and art in the garden’s lush seasonal landscape. From folk dances and family workshops to interactive exhibitions and rose celebrations, the programming offers something for all ages and interests. Most activities are free with admission or membership.

“Summer is one of the most joyful times at Descanso,” CEO Juliann Rooke said. “Whether you’re dancing on the Main Lawn, learning about the animals that call the garden home or strolling through powerful art installations, there’s inspiration around every corner. We can’t wait to welcome our visitors into this dynamic season of discovery, fun and community.”

The Summer Music and Dance Series will be held on June 12, July 10 and Aug. 14 from 5:30–6:45 p.m. The lively evenings of cultural dance and music light up the Main Lawn.

On June 12, Chervona Kalyna Ukrainian Dance Ensemble brings the energy of Ukrainian folk dances to life. Viver Brasil shares the joyful rhythms and ancestral traditions of Salvador, Brazil, on July 10. Pacifico Dance Company closes the series on Aug. 14 with a performance of traditional Mexican folklórico.

The Cultivate Series will be held on June 27, July 25 and Aug. 22 from 4:30-7 p.m. Cultivate is a monthly event that invites guests to experience Descanso Gardens in new and unexpected ways through themed tours, hands-on workshops, live demonstrations and music.

The “Rose-stravaganza” will be held on June 21-22 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Rose Garden. Celebrate the beauty, history and horticultural science of roses during the special weekend event featuring live music, floral displays, demonstrations and talks.

“Roots of Cool” runs from July 12–Oct. 12 in the Sturt Haaga Gallery, Boddy House and throughout the Gardens. Curated by Edith and Jolly de Guzman, the multi-site exhibition explores “shade equity,” the idea that access to cooling shade is not equally distributed across communities.

Additionally, outdoor installations across the gardens invite reflection on climate resilience and community. Highlights include imaginative bus stops reimagined as shaded urban sanctuaries, suspended tree umbrellas representing the cooling functions of trees and a forest of poetic “wayfinding love letters” responding to climate change.

A gallery exhibition at the Sturt Haaga Gallery and Boddy House delves into the past, present and future role of trees through visual and musical works by women artists. An opening reception will be held on July 1 from 5–7pm. Meet the artists and curators, enjoy live music and unwind at a no-host bar. The opening reception and garden admission are free from 5-7 p.m. On July 12, join curators Edith and Jolly de Guzman for a guided tour of the exhibit from 11 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m.
