The Skirball Cultural Center is observing the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat with “Roots and Renewal: Honoring the New Year of the Trees” on Sunday, Feb. 2, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Join the center for a free day of gratitude, healing, learning and community in recognition of the Jewish New Year of the Trees with artist-led talks, a curated Tu B’Shevat experience, food samples, guided campus walks, panel discussions and art making. The holiday centers on agricultural and spiritual themes while reflecting on gratitude for the natural world.
Visitors can decorate and fill containers with spices and herbs sourced from local Shemesh Farms throughout the festival. In the Haas Conference Center, join a Tu B’Shevat Experience with FromSoil2Soul creator Devorah Brous. Enjoy a bounty of locally sourced and sustainably harvested fruit, nuts, seeds, herbs and juices during an exploration of the ancient Jewish wisdom of the “Four Worlds.” Additional activities include compost-making with Steven Wynbrandt and pickling with Mary MacVean, former mind and body editor at the Los Angeles Times.
Other special programs include “Ancient Wisdom for a Future Ecology: Trees, Time, and Technology Gallery Tour” from 11–11:45 a.m. Led by artists Tiffany Shlain and Ken Goldberg, the exhibition and tour draw inspiration from the complex landscape of Los Angeles and the science of tree dating.
“A-Ha! Moments in Art and Science: A Panel Conversation” runs from noon-1 p.m. How can a moment of insight change the framework of how people think about trees, nature, math, science and humans? Join Goldberg, Shlain and professor Jennifer Chayes, dean of University of California, Berkeley’s College of Data Science and Society, for a conversation on nature’s big “a-ha” moments.
The Skirball Cultural Center will also hold “Repair Through Intersectional Climate Activism” from 2–3 p.m. on the museum terrace. The event is part of the Getty-led initiative PST ART: Art & Science Collide and in conjunction with the exhibition “Ancient Wisdom for a Future Ecology: Trees, Time and Technology.
Also, help TreePeople’s Dirt Doctor heal soil through the magic of mulch medicine in an engaging, educational and fun experience from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and 1:30–2:30 p.m. During the interactive presentation, guests will learn about the importance of healthy soil and plant an Italian stone pine seedling to take home.
An Arbor Tour of the Skirball Campus runs from 11:00–11:45 a.m. Learn about the diversity of trees with the center’s senior vice president of operations Ben Elisondo. Take a guided Mindfulness Walk from 1–2 p.m. and 2–3 p.m. on the center’s grounds and end the day with “Roots and Renewal” from 3:15–4 p.m. with remarks by the Skirball Center’s Rabbi in Residence Beau Shapiro and FromSoil2Soul’s Brous about Tu B’Shevat and taking care of the environment.
