Hollywood-based Galerie Lakaye is hosting “Of Spirits & Sirens” an exhibition of paintings on canvas by Haitian painter Levoy Exil, along with Vodou flags by four acclaimed artists working in the beaded and sequined textile tradition from Haiti. The exhibition runs through Feb. 7. Guests will be able to immerse themselves in a world of magic and mystery featuring the ethereal spirits and captivating sirens that permeate Haitian culture. Exil belongs to the renowned Saint Soleil tradition in which artists go into a Vodou trance before painting. The resulting work is dictated by what the artists see while in trance or what the spirits tell them to paint. The Saint Soleil school and movement was established in 1973. Exil is the only remaining living artist from the original group of painters.
Galerie Lakaye is Los Angeles’ premiere gallery of contemporary Haitian and ethnic art for 33 years. The gallery lives in Hollywood in a 1913 Craftsman house with two sculpture gardens.
