Proposition 6 is a statewide ballot measure that would eliminate involuntary servitude in California and close the so-called “slavery loophole.” Similar to the 13th Amendment in the U.S. Constitution, the California Constitution prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. As a result, inmates in California prisons can be required to do manual labor or face consequences, including revocation of their privileges while in prison and deferrals of their parole eligibility. The ballot measure would prohibit forced prison labor and eliminate the last remnant of slavery in California. Alabama, Colorado, Tennessee and Vermont have adopted similar measures in recent years.

The measure is supported by the ACLU, Anti-Recidivism Coalition, the California Democratic Party and the California Labor Federation. The California Republican Party is one of the few organizations opposed to the measure.
