For The Washington Post’s annual museums issue, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Getty Center/Getty Villa made the list for the top 20 best museums in America. The list is curated by The Post’s art critics Philip Kennicott and Sebastian Smee, who rank their favorite museums based on their collections, exhibitions and history of public engagement.
“[The Getty Center and Getty Villa] has a significant collection of European art and, at its satellite museum, the Getty Villa, an important collection of antiquities,” Kennicott wrote.
“With some 150,000 objects surveying 6,000 years of human history, its collection has been as influential on the artists of Los Angeles as those of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art have been on the work of artists in New York,” he wrote.
The Getty Center is located at 1200 Getty Center Drive. The Getty Villa is located 17985 Pacific Coast Highway. For information, visit getty.edu. LACMA is located at 5905 Wilshire Blvd. For information, visit lacma.org.
