A dramatic confrontation in Beverly Hills on Saturday, Sept. 28, ended with an assailant being stabbed by the victim near the intersection of Spalding Drive and Charleville Boulevard. The Beverly Hills Police Department is investigating the incident, which resulted in the assailant’s death and was partly captured on video and shared on social media.

According to the BHPD, police responded to a call of “unknown trouble” at 2:51 p.m. on Sept. 28 in the 100 block of Spalding Drive.

“Officers arrived to find an adult male suffering from injuries following a physical altercation,” the BHPD said in a press release. “The investigation determined that a male suspect confronted the victim and his child as they were walking on the sidewalk. During the altercation, the victim stabbed the suspect, and both individuals sustained injuries.”

The suspect, who has yet to be identified, was transported to a hospital where he later died.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the suspect’s identification is still “pending” as of press time. A cause of death has not been released. It is unclear if the man died as a result of the stabbing.

A witness who identified himself as Brian said he was driving down the street when he saw the suspect attacking the victim, who had a baby in his arms. Some witnesses said it appeared the attacker was attempting to kidnap the young child. Brian said he pulled over and attempted to intervene, at which point the attacker turned his attention toward Brian. The attacker dove into Brian’s car through the back window, allegedly grabbing at a dog that was inside the vehicle. Brian and his son wrestled their dog away from the assailant, while the car rolled onto the sidewalk during the chaos. The attacker then stumbled over a hedge into a front yard, where he banged on windows before being tased by police and arrested.

“[The attacker] was not present, he was having some kind of psychotic break, and so it was kind of scary,” an anonymous witness told NBC4 Los Angeles.

Video captured moments after the attack shows a man carrying a young child running away from the assailant as he walks toward a dark sedan and jumps in through the back window. The attacker appears to be pushed out of the car while still trying to grab something inside. Another video shows police apprehending the attacker, who appears to have a wound on his face, as he lay face down in the front yard of a home.

BHPD Lt. Andrew Myers could not confirm the details of the attack, citing an ongoing investigation.

“It’s an active investigation. Detectives are following up with the interviews regarding the two people involved,” Myers said.

Myers said the last homicide in Beverly Hills was in December 2021.
