Huntington Meats and Farmers Market Poultry at the Original Farmers Market are holding a backto-school supplies drive to ensure students are prepared to return to classes.

The two shops are coming together for their inaugural Backto-School Supply Drive, which will run through Aug. 31. Huntington Meats and Farmers Market Poultry owner Jim Cascone announced that the goal is to collect enough supplies for 350 students. The school supplies will be distributed to the Union Rescue Mission in Downtown Los Angeles.

Customers who donate new, unused school supplies valued at $10 or more at the shops will receive a complimentary pound of ground beef or homemade sausages from Huntington Meats, or a dozen fresh eggs from Farmers Market Poultry. “Having worked with Union Rescue Mission previously with our annual Kids Pajama Drive, we felt this was another unique idea for the end of summer,” Cascone said. “We forget that some kids may never have started school with brand new school supplies, which was something many of us took for granted growing up.”

“Our goal is to try make school days a little more exciting for those kids that may be experiencing homelessness or are members of a family that just doesn’t have the means to purchase their little ones new school supplies,” head butcher Jon Escobedo added. “We want to do our part to make sure that kids in need in Los Angeles have an exciting start to the school year.”
