The city of West Hollywood, in partnership with Athens Services, will host a Sustainability Town Hall focusing on zero waste and organic waste on Wednesday, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd.

Topics include implementation of rules in accordance with Senate Bill 1383, which aims to divert 75% of organic waste from landfills and rescue 20% of surplus edible food by 2025. The measures will help reduce methane emissions and address food insecurity.

Prior to the program, attendees will have the opportunity to meet West Hollywood staff and Athens Services representatives to discuss zero waste and sustainability initiatives. Athens Services will distribute free countertop kitchen pails for organic food waste.

The Sustainability Town Hall is part of the city’s commitment to sustainability, community engagement and preserving our environment. In 2011, the city released its Climate Action Plan, which addresses climate change and reduces greenhouse gas emissions at the local level. Although climate change is a global problem, the city recognizes that many strategies to adapt to a changing climate are best enacted at the local level.
