Descanso Gardens is celebrating the grand opening of the Descanso Railroad, featuring a new miniature train experience.

The Descanso Railroad enhances the popularity of its beloved passenger train, a fixture since 1996. Visitors can watch model trains travel through a variety of unique and captivating landscapes and depots. A new train platform was also created where passengers with purchased tickets can board the electric train for a ride through the garden. The enchanting addition captivates visitors of all ages with its blend of natural beauty, artistic ingenuity and homage to history.

The new Descanso Railroad features meticulously crafted model trains that traverse stunning landscapes and depots made from natural materials, many of which have been sourced directly from Descanso Gardens. Each depot uniquely represents a great American train station, including a nod to the historical Los Angeles station.

The innovative model train area is the creation of Applied Imagination, a company that designs botanical models and sculptures with G scale model trains. Known for whimsical yet sophisticated installations, Applied Imagination’s displays have delighted audiences across the nation for more than 30 years. Descanso Gardens is proud to be the first location on the West Coast to have the extraordinary rail project, adding a new dimension to the visitor experience.

“We are incredibly excited to bring the magic of these beloved railway displays to Descanso Gardens,” Descanso Gardens CEO Juliann Rooke said. “This new addition offers a unique way for our visitors to connect with the beauty of nature and the history of rail travel, all within the serene setting of our gardens.”

The Descanso Railroad is open 8:30 a.m.– 6:30 p.m., daily. Train rides are available from 9:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. Train ride tickets are $5 and may be purchased onsite at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. The train route covers approximately one-quarter mile and the ride lasts approximately six minutes. Riders must be at least 30 inches tall and able to sit on their own.
