The California African American Museum announced it will reopen on May 22 with “Toward the Sky’s Back Door,” a groundbreaking traveling exhibition of work by artist Paula Wilson. On May 26, the museum will join the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to present the final stop in the national tour of the acclaimed exhibition Simone Leigh.

CAAM will reopen Tatyana Fazlalizadeh’s “Speaking to Falling Seeds,” an installation of large-scale portraits of Black Angelenos that are wheat pasted across the museum’s atrium walls. Also continuing at CAAM are the historical exhibitions “We Are Not Strangers Here: African American Histories in Rural California” and “Black California Dreamin’: Claiming Space at America’s Leisure Frontier.”

“I’m thrilled that we will reopen our doors in May with this slate of exhibitions,” CAAM Executive Director Cameron Shaw said. “With three solo presentations of work by outstanding Black women artists, CAAM continues to foreground important conversations about contemporary art, representation and its intersections with the lived experiences of our visitors. At the same time, the history exhibitions on view reveal under-told narratives that are significant in their own right while offering deep context and connections to the contemporary art shown across the museum.”
