The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation has launched the fourth annual Howling Heroes contest in search of the LAFD’s next official K-9 mascot. Submissions are open through April 24 at 8 p.m. and members of the public can nominate their pet dogs.
Participation is fast and easy. Owners can visit supportlafd.org and upload a photo of their pet with a brief description about what makes them a hero. Past Howling Heroes have been therapy dogs, autism assistance dogs and service dogs.
Members of the public can also vote for their favorite dogs by making donations. Every $1 equals one vote, and participants can vote as many times as they wish.
Dogs have many important roles in the LAFD, from the Canine Therapy Program to the Arson Counter-Terrorism Section and canine Urban Search and Rescue teams. All proceeds raised from Howling Heroes will go to the LAFD Foundation to support the department’s canine programs and other programs that help Los Angeles firefighters save lives and protect communities.
A panel of judges including LAFD Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, Lori Greiner, of “Shark Tank,” Pauley Perrette, of “NCIS,” philanthropist Irena Medavoy and journalist Lu Parker will evaluate the top 10 contestants and announce the 2024 Howling Hero on Friday, April 26.
The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation provides vital equipment and funds programs that help the LAFD. Approximately 97% of the city’s fire budget is allocated towards personnel costs, leaving 3% to cover all other life-safety costs. For information, visit supportlafd.org.
