The Hammer Museum presents “Trans Hirstory in 99 Objects” on Wednesday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m.

“Trans Hirstory in 99 Objects” is a book project by artist Chris E. Vargas’ Museum of Trans Hirstory & Art exploring trans art, activism, artifacts and resistance across more than four centuries, “Trans Hirstory in 99 Objects” charts a gender-neutral, trans-centric “hirstory” of art. Vargas will be joined by book contributors and artists Zackary Drucker, Edgar Fabián Frías, Raquel Gutiérrez, Amos Mac and Uri McMillan at the event.

Vargas is a video maker and interdisciplinary artist. His work uses humor and performance to explore the complex ways that queer and trans people negotiate spaces for themselves in popular culture. He received a 2016 Creative Capital Award and a 2020 John S. Guggenheim fellowship.

Drucker is an American multimedia artist, director and producer who has dedicated her work to telling stories that expand cultural understanding of difference. Frías works in installation, photography, video art, sound, sculpture, printed textiles, GIFs, performance, social practice and community organizing. Gutiérrez is an award-winning critic, essayist, poet and educator based in Southern Arizona. McMillan is a Los Angeles-based writer who has published essays and created museum and gallerybased publications.
