American Youth Symphony’s next concert, “AYS Up Close” will take place at 6:30 p.m. on February 25, at the Moss Theater. General ticket reservations are now available. Tickets are available with a suggested donation of $20 on the AYS website.

The program was in part curated by AYS Musician-Fellows and will give them the opportunity to interact with their peers across the orchestra. AYS principal flute Sierra Schmeltzer nominated Miguel Del Aguila’s “Submerged” for flute, harp and viola because “it captivated me with its vivid imagery. Inspired by Alfonsina Storni’s poem ‘Yo en el fondo del mar,’ the opening evokes a sunny beach day where I can almost visualize the sparkling ocean water and seagulls screeching overhead. The middle section plunges you into the profound darkness of the ocean’s depths, while the finale resurfaces with a cheerful tone that conceals the sinister undertones of the middle section. An enjoyable juxtaposition that resonated with me!”
