The reason for increased traffic incidents is driver and pedestrian distraction. Obviously, based on reported incidents, the so-called “traffic calming” measures implemented in the past 15 years have had no effect and perhaps even a negative impact.
Driver and pedestrian distraction has increased. Cars come with larger screens and more options for distraction. Drivers, including ride-share drivers, do not plan ahead or know where they are and rely on maps on the go for guidance, which is very distracting. Proposed measures to slow traffic will just produce frustration which leads to further unwanted problems.
Only blaming speed will not result in the improvements we all want. Mechanical speed limits will result in unintended consequences.
