The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles will host the Welcome Day for its newest exhibition “100 Carats: Icons of the Gem World” on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. “100 Carats” brings together more than two dozen gems – 20 of which are more than 100 carats. Welcome Day guests can enjoy hands-on demonstrations and family-friendly activities.
A cabbing demonstration station will offer a close-up look at the most popular form of gem cutting. Watch how a mineral can be transformed simply by how it’s cut. Also, view some of the museum’s mineral collections to learn more about their unique properties and how they reveal the scientific story of the history of the planet.
The museum is also holding a Gem and Mineral Hall Scavenger Hunt. Fill out the scavenger hunt and explore the Gem & Mineral Hall to receive a prize. (The hunt must be completed by 3 p.m. to redeem a prize.) Color and decorate gem-themed holiday cards to celebrate the season.
On Sunday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., NHM will host its first jewelry trunk show featuring handmade creations from local designers Margaret Solow and Jemma Sands.
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles is located at 900 Exposition Blvd. For information, visit nhm.org/calendar/welcome-day-100-carats-icons-gem-world.
