The Getty Center is holding “Going Viral in the Renaissance featuring Stephanie Porras” on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 4-5:30 p.m. at the center and online via Zoom.

What do today’s TikTok dances and Renaissance prints have in common? Porras describes how early modern prints invited repetition and emulation, taking advantage of new media technologies and emerging global infrastructures long before the invention of the internet. She will examine how prints and other artworks were used as models by artists working across the early modern world, reconstructing how such images were copied, challenging assumptions about artistic invention in Renaissance art.

Porras is a professor of art history at Tulane University. Her research focuses on northern European art of the 15th-17th centuries. The talk will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.

The Getty will also hold the world premiere of “Arthur Tress: Water’s Edge” on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at the center. An immersive journey into the life and unique vision of acclaimed photographer Tress and filmed over four years across diverse Californian locales, the documentary delves deep into his creative process and his philosophical reflections on aging, relationships and legacy. The film’s non-linear narrative, set against the backdrop of Tress’ peculiar and often surrealistic imagery, lets audiences perceive the world through the artist’s distinctive lens and invites them into his intimate universe. Woven throughout are the universal themes of mortality, war and environmentalism, encapsulated by motifs of destruction and rebirth.
