Brookside resident Julie Stromberg has been sworn in on the Los Angeles Central Area Planning Commission, which serves as an appeals board for projects reviewed by the Department of City Planning.

“It’s very exciting and it’s an honor,” Stromberg said. “I’ve always wanted to serve on the Central Area Planning Commission. I have always been interested in land use issues and have been involved with them on the [Greater Wilshire] neighborhood council. A lot of the neighborhood land use issues that go on have a huge impact on quality of life in our neighborhood.”

The commission is one of seven regional panels that reviews development projects. It stretches from the Beverly Hills and West Hollywood city borders to Griffith Park and downtown Los Angeles, and includes Hollywood, the Miracle Mile, Hancock Park and Koreatown. When appeals are made to a zoning administrator’s decision, they are heard by the regional planning commission, which makes a recommendation to the full City Planning Commission.

Stromberg was recommended by Commissioner Steven Kang to fill a vacancy and was appointed by Mayor Karen Bass. She was approved by the Los Angeles City Council on Oct. 13 and her first meeting was on Oct. 24.

Stromberg, who has long been involved in community affairs, was elected to the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council in 2014 and has served as chair of the council’s Land Use, Transportation, Sustainability and Neighborhood Purpose Grants committees. She stepped down from the neighborhood council upon accepting the commission appointment, which is for two years.

The Los Angeles Central Area Planning Commission meets in-person at City Hall on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Members of the public can attend virtually or in-person.
