I rarely write a letter to the editor of a publication. But, Beverly Press is deserving of my highest compliments for presenting the news as it occurs without intense opinions designed to sway readers’ minds one way or the other.

You actually have faith that your readers will be able to formulate their own opinions based upon the facts presented. That alone makes you stand out amongst the plethora of other news organizations in our community and the nation.

Speaking of community, thank you for not simply being a Beverly Hills-centric publication. While a proud business owner, philanthropist and homeowner in Beverly Hills, I still recognize that we share geographical borders and culture with our adjacent neighbors whom you represent as well. I am thrilled to have local exposure to more than my “bubble” and you provide it in spades.

Keep on doing what you are doing and, on a totally tangential note, I invite your readers to experience Halloween trick or treating this year unlike anything else in Los Angeles County at the front of my landmarked Witch’s House on Walden Drive. Halloween at “The Witch” (as I affectionately call my home) brings endless smiles (not fear) to people’s faces … and that makes me smile.

I could not have been more delighted when I opened my hardcopy L.A. Times to see a beautiful publication recognizing the architectural wonders of Los Angeles. I was surprised that the L.A. Times put in the effort to cover many of the most amazing places in L.A. that we sometimes take for granted. Imagine my greater surprise when I noticed it was our neighborhood Beverly Press that produced it.

Since I was a kid, I have always been frustrated that Los Angeles had a tendency to tear down its heritage. (As a councilmember in two cities, I played a role in saving the Formosa Café, the Century Plaza and Norms La Cienega, among others, channeling my frustration). One of the earliest examples of this tendency that so outraged me was the demolition of the original Brown Derby in 1980, although as noted in the magazine, the Derby itself survives, hidden in a small strip mall on Wilshire. However, many wonderful places have survived due to preservation efforts, and other amazing places have been built since, such as the Disney Concert Hall.

 And what a rare treat to have an interview with Frank Gehry, an architectural genius who just doesn’t give interviews.

I hope you find a way to distribute this wonderful magazine beyond just the borders of our neighborhood. It is a treasure that deserves to be shared widely. Bravo!
