The Culinary Historians of Southern California presents “Lunching on the Lot: How Stars and Moguls Ate at Studio Commissaries,” a free, in-person lecture by Pat Saperstein on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the Los Angeles Central Library.
Since the earliest days of Hollywood, movie studios have fed their armies of stars and crew working on the lots. From Warner Bros., which served the top names of the Golden Age of Hollywood who were shooting classics like “Casablanca” during World War II, to Disney, Paramount, MGM and Fox, each studio commissary had its own vintage character and unique menu items.
The commissaries still exist and their specialties have evolved to suit today’s tastes. Come along for a starry tour of Hollywood as seen through the studios’ official restaurants, the people who worked there and the off-lot staples like Tam O’Shanter and the Smoke House.
Saperstein is an author, restaurant journalist and deputy editor at Variety. The lecture, followed by a themed reception, is free and open to the public. The Los Angeles Central Library is located at 630 W. Fifth St. For information and reservations, visit eventbrite.com/ e/lunching-on-the-lot-how-stars-and-moguls-ate-at-studio-commissaries-tickets-7214843380 77?aff=oddtdtcreator.
