National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from Sept. 15-Oct. 15 and for the next four weeks, the traditions, customs and cuisines of the countries of Central and South America will be celebrated at the Original Farmers Market, corner of Third and Fairfax.
The Farmers Market has a rich history of bringing together vendors from diverse backgrounds to create a melting pot of flavors in one centralized location.
Frances Tario, who is of Honduran and Guatemalan descent, owns Du-par’s Restaurant and Bakery. Tario has built a thriving restaurant business with innovative ideas, promotions and special new dishes. Its original hot cakes with melted butter and maple syrup remain popular, however, many new flavors have been added. And just in time for fall, the pumpkin pancakes are back. Be sure to try the churro-cinnamon pancakes and horchata iced coffee during Hispanic Heritage Month.
Gustavo Valdez, half of the husband-and-wife duo that owns Balam the Jaguar Coffee Roasters, hails from Mexico. With his wife Ning Hou, Valdez created an organic coffee haven where enthusiasts can sample worldwide roasts, including their signature blend featuring beans from Valdez’s native Chiapas, Mexico.
Coffee Corner has been in business for over 70 years. Owner Lillian Sears once worked on a coffee farm as a youth in El Salvador before beginning her career at Coffee Corner as a member of the counter staff in 1984. She bought the business in 1994 and continues to offer coffee, tea, fruit drinks and freshly baked muffins and rolls.
The Original Farmers Market is located at 6333 W. Third St. For information, visit farmersmarketla.com.
