A new 50-unit supportive housing complex for people formerly experiencing homelessness is scheduled to open on Aug. 8 at 849 N. La Brea Ave., just south of Willoughby Avenue.
Pointe on La Brea was built by the nonprofit EAH Housing in partnership with the city and county of Los Angeles. Tenants will receive onsite services and resources. Placement in the building is by referral-only.
The building includes 24 apartments for tenants in the state’s No Place Like Home program, which offers housing for homeless individuals. Four units are designated under the county’s Mental Health Housing Program and referrals to those units will be made by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. An additional 21 units are reserved for individuals experiencing homelessness. Applicants for those units will be referred by the Department of Health Services.
The project was approved by the Los Angeles City Council in October 2021, during the tenure of former Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz. Current 5th District Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky supports the project and said it will provide much-needed housing to address the city’s homelessness crisis.
“I am really looking forward to this project finally opening,” Yaroslavsky said. “Creating more permanent housing projects like Pointe on La Brea is a really important part of making a real impact on homelessness in Los Angeles.”
The City Council approved $16.5 million for the $32.3-million project, which also received funding from Measure HHH, a ballot measure approved by voters in 2016 to fund homeless housing. An official grand opening ceremony will possibly be held in September, said Sharon Sandow, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Housing Department.
“We are very excited for this project to open, 50 new units of housing for homeless individuals and veterans including six units for mobility impaired tenants and two units for sensory impaired tenants,” Sandow said. “Amenities include a community room, courtyard, rooftop deck and laundry rooms.”
The building will also have a ground-floor has a meeting space for community programs. For information, visit lahousing.lacity.org.
