The Writers Guild of America strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has hit its sixth week, and as members continue to picket day after day in front of the major studios, WGA member Jaydi Samuels Kuba is using her unique skills to make new connections.
“The AMPTP’s refusal to negotiate a fair deal is why we are protesting,” Samuels Kuba said. “[But] why not invite all the single writers to protest together and hopefully find love simultaneously? After all, we’re already great at multi-tasking.”
Besides being a television writer, Samuels Kuba and her business partner Lauren Rosenberg are known as the “Love Agents of Hollywood.” Together, they have a company called LJMatchmaking, where they help singles find love.
“After the strike started, we were approached by two WGA writers Debby Wolfe and Marcos Luevanos (who happen to be clients of ours), who thought we could help pull off a singles-themed WGA picket. They were right,” she said.
Now, every other week, Samuels Kuba organizes a matchmaking picket, with the first held outside the NBC Universal lot. It was followed by a mixer at Roadside Tacos, which is offering 20% off for WGA members during the strike.
“We provided nametags for singles who would write their names in red, blue or purple depending on the gender they preferred to approach them (purple meaning open to everyone). Nearly 500 people showed up, so I’m glad we brought enough nametags,” Samuels Kuba said.
She said that, so far, she has noticed a lot of dates come out of the events.
“Several phone numbers were exchanged in front of me … we’ll have to see where those particular connections lead,” Samuels Kuba said.
Attendee, writer and commercial real estate agent Kevin Dembinsky said that what he has dubbed “Love at Frist Strike” provided an outlet writers don’t always have to connect with other people.
“Well, aside from romance, I think just getting together and commiserating in a like-minded community is very beneficial,” Dembinsky said. “Writing can be a lonely endeavor at times and connecting with other writers reminds you why you keep at it. But if a romantic spark was found, that’d be a bonus. Prior to dating though, the film rights will need to be agreed upon.”
Matchmaking has been a longtime passion for Kuba Samuels, starting when she was a self-described “wingwoman” for her friends at parties.
“Once I spread the word that I was going about this in a more official fashion, it caught on like wildfire,” Kuba Samuels said.
It even worked for her. Samuels Kuba’s husband was one of her company’s matchmaking clients.
“I guess you can say I got high on my own supply,” she said.
In addition to her side business, Samuels Kuba has enjoyed success as a television writer in Hollywood. She started as an assistant to Seth MacFarlane, and then got the opportunity to write the 250th episode of “Family Guy,” which helped launch her career. So while putting together single writers is a positive side effect of the strike, Samuels Kuba stresses that the reason for her picket is ultimately to support the WGA.
“I hope this attack by the AMPTP on our compensation and working conditions ends soon. This affects singles and those coupled up alike,” she said.

For Dembinsky, love may already be in the air.
“I did meet someone interesting, but I’m not sure how this would go over if I mentioned her name in print before asking her out,” he said.
